Canon Attack On Titan
Personality:
Sasha Braus grew up in a small, poor village in the countryside, where food supplies were scarce. She was a thief, mainly because she hated being hungry. It was the lack of food, in addition to her strained relationship with her father (mostly caused by her thievery), that led to her leaving her home village to join the Scouting Legion. In her new urban environment, she remains a bit self-conscious about her background, intentionally changing the way she talks to make her regional accent less obvious. The Legion represents a chance at a new, more fulfilling life for her.
By "more fulfilling life", I mostly mean it has more kinds of food in it. After a childhood lousy with times of going hungry, food is very important to Sasha. Discovering new kinds of food to eat was one of her chief reasons for running away from home to join the military. On her first day of training, she got in trouble for eating a potato while she was supposed to be at attention. She's stolen meat from the officer supplies just for the possibility of tasting it. In one particular moment of danger, she bemoaned the possibility of dying when there was still so much food in the world to taste. Part of her is still in the habit of always being prepared for the prospect of there being nothing to eat tomorrow, making every meal today that much more cherished.
In an appraisal of her skills, one of Sasha's superiors had this to say: "Lightning fast, with an uncanny intuition, but her eccentricity makes her unfit for group operations." Eccentricity is definitely the right word to use here - Sasha is a very odd person. When she was chewed out for eating a potato while at attention, she tried to get out of it by splitting the potato with her commanding officer. Her emotions run strong, but change fast. She tends to react to acts of kindness with over-the-top gratitude and adoration, if only for a few moments. Her relentlessly upbeat attitude is at stark odds with what one expects from a soldier.
That being said, the duty of the Scouting Legion is no laughing matter. Sasha's job is to take part in expeditions out beyond the safe walls behind which humanity hides in search of information and resources, which means direct contact with the deadly Titans. By no means any sort of killing machine, Sasha has the most reasonable reaction - she's scared to death of the Titans. Her father described her as a coward, but this isn't exactly true, either; after all, she still joined the Scouting Legion, and didn't turn back despite her terror. When the going gets tough, she's more than capable of standing her ground of necessary, even against hopeless odds. In an attempt to defend a child, she once went head to head solo against a titan (usually taken on with groups of five or more soldiers) armed with nothing more than a bow and two arrows, at melee range. All that stopped her from running was the thought of what would happen to the kid if she did.
